Empowering employees through language
In Sweden, we have initiated language training for employees with language impairments. The project is being carried out in collaboration with EU funding and the Swedish trade union IF Metall. The Jönköping unit has been selected as one of just ten companies to receive support for implementing this important project.
Our units in Sweden are highly multicultural, with employees hailing from a diverse range of countries around the world. Among them, we have many individuals from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and various European nations. A significant portion of our workforce is made up of individuals who have only recently arrived in Sweden. For many of them, understanding Swedish well enough to follow basic instructions is a major challenge. In addition, a number of these employees are not yet proficient in English, further complicating their ability to navigate the workplace effectively.
The primary goal of this language training programme is to significantly improve each participant’s ability to communicate more effectively in the workplace. By the end of the program, participants will be better equipped to understand work instructions, engage in meaningful interactions with their colleagues, and contribute more actively to team activities and projects. The program focuses not only on learning the Swedish language but also on fostering greater workplace integration and communication, which are essential for both individual and team success.
“We aim to help employees use Swedish more confidently in the workplace, enabling them to participate more easily in training, development opportunities, and overall workplace activities. Our broader goal is to help strengthen their integration, not just within the company but also within Swedish society. Ultimately, this initiative will improve their skill sets and enhance their prospects in the job market”, says Helene Wallentin, HR Business Partner at Lindström.
The language training program is designed to run from October to February and takes place during working hours. This approach ensures that the training is accessible to all employees, with minimal disruption to their daily work responsibilities.
Through this project, we are investing in our employees’ growth, creating a more inclusive and effective workplace, and supporting their long-term success in Sweden. It reflects our commitment to fostering a workplace where diversity is embraced, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
