Cold-weather workwear shaped by real customer needs: WinterPro and ColdPro

Cold work is rarely just cold. It can be wet, windy, repetitive, active, still, sweaty, freezing: sometimes all during the same shift.

A worker may move from a chilled production area to an outdoor loading dock, then back into a warehouse. They may bend, lift, drive, wait, carry tools and move between changing temperatures. In one moment, they need warmth. In the next, they need ventilation and freedom to move.

That is where winter workwear is truly tested.

A pocket that tears, a sleeve that restricts movement or a back hem that rises when bending may sound like a small detail. But in real cold work, small details become part of the working day.

That is why Lindström renewed the winter collection: to create cold-weather workwear that better reflects how people actually work in food production, cold storage, logistics, warehouses, retail and outdoor winter environments.

Lindström’s previous winter collection had served customers for a long time. But the needs of customers and wearers had changed.

Companies were looking for winter workwear with a more modern and professional look, better movement comfort, stronger durability and easier repairability. In some cases, they also needed certified cold-protection workwear for safety requirements or risk assessments.

The details only real work reveals

The renewed collection was developed through customer feedback, test use and discussions with internal experts, sales, support teams and end users.

But some insights only appear when you look closely at how garments are used in real work.

During customer visits, Irena and the team discussed, for example, pocket functionality with wearers. What did they carry? How did they move? Where was the garment under stress? The team saw that pockets could start to tear under heavy use, especially when sharp tools or daily items were carried. 

If I hadn’t visited the customer face to face, I don’t think we would have recognised the issue. You have to see the real garment, with the people who use it.

That small observation directly shaped the design: the pockets were reinforced because, in daily work, they clearly take a lot of wear.

The same thinking appears in reinforced leg ends, improved adjustability and practical features that support daily use. They are practical changes based on the areas where garments are under the most pressure in everyday work.

Warm enough, without overheating

Warmth is essential in cold work. But too much warmth in the wrong situation can also become a problem.

A worker who stands still in a cold room may need strong insulation. A worker moving between indoor and outdoor areas may need something different: warmth, but also ventilation and freedom to move.

Warmth is very important, but it depends on the working role. You can be standing in a cold environment, moving a lot, working indoors or outdoors. It differs a lot. We learned that users need balance.

That balance is visible in the renewed WinterPro and ColdPro design.

The garments combine weather protection with comfort features such as ergonomic shaping, fleece warmth zones, practical adjustments and back ventilation. The back ventilation zipper is designed to help reduce overheating when activity levels or working conditions change.

A longer back hem also helps protect the wearer when bending or squatting, a small but important detail in winter conditions.

When people work in the cold for a full shift, comfort quickly becomes a practical issue, not just a preference. If a garment limits movement, feels too warm during active work or leaves the back exposed when bending, it affects how well people can work throughout the day.

Cold protection works as a system

Even the right garment cannot do everything alone. Cold protection depends on the full working situation: temperature, wind, moisture, exposure time, activity level, layering and supporting PPE such as hoods, gloves, footwear and headwear.

We can ensure good protection against cold with the garments, but they work as a system. Correct layering is also important, depending on the work and activity level.

This is why choosing workwear for cold environments should start from considering the real working conditions, not only the temperature on paper.

Designed to last, and to be repaired

Another story behind the renewal starts with a zipper.

A winter coat can still be usable, but if the zipper is difficult to replace, the whole garment may be taken out of service earlier than necessary.

Sometimes a good winter coat from our previous collection had to be removed from use only because replacing the zipper was too complicated. That is why easy repairability was important from the beginning.

Garments need to perform through repeated use, professional washing, maintenance and repair. Longer-lasting, easier-to-repair garments can mean fewer unnecessary replacements, smoother service, better lifecycle value and less waste.

The renewed collection uses durable materials, reinforced high-wear areas and repair-friendly design choices. It also follows a more minimalistic design approach: fewer unnecessary seams, less unnecessary hardware and a stronger focus on features that users truly need. In this collection, simplicity means being selective: keeping the details that add value and leaving out the ones that do not.

WinterPro or ColdPro: choosing the right level of protection

Cold-weather workwear is not one-size-fits-all. Some working environments need practical winter workwear for changing cold conditions. Others require certified cold-protection PPE because of safety requirements, risk assessments or tenders.

WinterPro

Designed for general cold-environment workwear needs. It is suitable for work environments that need durable, ergonomic winter workwear, but do not require certified cold-protection PPE.

ColdPro

The certified option when tested cold protection is required. It provides EN 342 certified cold protection for cold environments at or below −5°C.

In simple terms:
WinterPro supports everyday cold work. ColdPro is the certified option when the job requires it.
