Clothes for rent?
Renting out clothing is not a new practice. After all, Lindström has been providing high-quality workwear to sectors such as construction , healthcare and food service workers for more than 170 years. However, the ethical question arises as more and more people are willing to rent their everyday clothing instead of buying it.
Have we reached the era where renting clothes, instead of buying them, will become the norm?
The fashion industry and the media feed our obsession with buying and wearing the latest brands. They present them to us so temptingly that people rush to be the first to buy the item. But once purchased, the garment can only be worn once or a few times at most before others start making mean comments like, “Oh, you’re wearing that dress again. Don’t you have anything else to wear? Are you sleeping in it?”
Celebrities are the biggest victims of this cruel practice, especially in the tabloid media. Red carpets are the place where it is especially unacceptable to wear the same dress twice, even if it is a designer dress. This public outcry has now entered our daily lives and the average person is also targeted if they do not regularly update their wardrobe.
Many clothes are not worn more than once before being thrown away and this consumer culture is estimated to result in around £140 million ending up in landfill in the UK.
Currently, many environmental startups around the world are launching online clothing rental services to combat the problem. Many sites already offer a subscription service for choosing clothes on a weekly basis, which are then washed and returned for subsequent rental to users.
Of course, the idea of renting clothes is not new. It has been possible to rent wedding dresses, tuxedos, and formal wear for special events, and many companies have specialized in this type of service for years. And as we mentioned at the beginning, we have been serving similar textile companies for decades. The change now is that this new movement is now targeting the Instagram generation and their everyday clothing needs.
The initial interest paid off. One Chinese company has reached 10 million users, although they admit that their service is not universally accepted. Users can choose from a wide range of T-shirts, skirts, shirts, dresses and shoes from different brands, but many people have reservations about hygiene. Although the clothes look clean and fresh, they have been worn by different people who have done a variety of activities with them.
