{"id":17684,"date":"2024-07-04T15:53:23","date_gmt":"2024-07-04T10:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lindstromgroup.com\/in\/?p=17684"},"modified":"2024-12-27T12:37:18","modified_gmt":"2024-12-27T07:07:18","slug":"heightened-relevance-of-wash-program-in-india-during-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lindstromgroup.com\/in\/articles\/heightened-relevance-of-wash-program-in-india-during-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Heightened relevance of WASH Program in India during COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>While COVID \u201319 hurled new challenges in the way of WASH services, the nature of the pandemic itself emphasized the importance of basic WASH services and practices.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, the pandemic response helped to transform and teach WASH norms and behaviours for the long-term, particularly handwashing with soap in households, community spaces, healthcare facilities, schools and community-based pre-schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A few areas where WASH Program was able to help marginalized populations in COVID-19:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNICEF launched a swift and tailored response to protect migrant workers on arduous journeys to their distant homes as COVID-19 gripped India. They provided health and hygiene kits to women and children to support them in their onward journeys, ensuring essential protection and nutrition. Help was extended pan India, touching various states \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Karnataka alone, 30000+ frontline workers were trained on Wash measures, and more than 12 million people were reached to spread awareness on safe behaviours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Gujarat, 200000 teachers were trained through digital training modules on WASH and help them benchmark their respective schools\u2019 access to WASH facilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Chhattisgarh, the WASH team joined hands with local NGOs to train volunteers in COVID-19 relief camps on maintaining hygiene and greywater management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/old.lindstromgroup.com\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/Infograph_Unicef_CovidResponse-600x338-1.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:543px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way forward&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/old.lindstromgroup.com\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Wash_Infograph_results-1-600x455.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12086\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2019, according to the latest estimates, the number of people without access to toilets has reduced significantly by an estimated 450 million people. It is crucial to ensure that there is sustained usage of toilets by all at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNICEF WASH program continues to support the government of India\u2019s flagship programs like Swachh Bharat Mission and National Rural Drinking Water Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the WASH program, the future priority is to intensify wash services and awareness, especially among children and families from vulnerable communities such as urban settlements and people on the move.
